Mark Tinley, M.A.

For the longest time what I wanted to do was work with people in a way that was meaningful (for them and for me). What now seems like long ago, I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering, then worked in the corporate world selling electronic test equipment to engineers for 20 years. I enjoyed the first 10, but during the last 10 I became increasingly dissatisfied. So after a lot of soul searching and many changes (that's the short version) I returned to school, received a masters degree in clinical psychology and have become a therapist. You could say that I have arrived at my hope and my dream, except that...

I don't believe that we ever "arrive". Even if we did get everything we want (it does happen sometimes), somehow, eventually, it is not enough and we want something else. The journey is what I believe life is about and that it is ongoing. This helps to keep things in perspective and to understand that living in the present is preferable to focusing on what has been or what could be. I believe that actively pursuing what we want, facing fears and not trying to avoid pain at all cost, is an important aspect of living a rich full life.

I am the parent of three children. They are all in their 20's now and I am still learning how to be their parent. The challenge is that my role with them is still changing. They need different things at different ages and it can be difficult keeping up with them. For them, living their life is a full time job, for us being a parent is only part of our focus in life. It can be confusing as we try to be a parent that is appropriate for their age and stage in life… and we will always be their parent.

I know what it is like to be very frustrated in life, to have unfulfilled hopes and dreams, to want more out of life and to not be clear how to get from where you're at to where you want to be.

Also,
I like to use humor (when appropriate, of course), it just makes life more bearable when it's difficult.

Please give me a call and let's have a conversation to see how I can be of help. This won’t cost you anything except a little of your time.
